Eric’s Playtime Series # 12 – Open D Fun

Uncategorized
When I need a guitar, I always have one. I even have a carbon fiber guitar that lives in my car trunk. A Carbon Fiber guitar is not affected by the temperature. It is also impervious to water and

is made from materials that are not damaged by impacts. So it is safe to “live” in the trunk. I always have a guitar close by. I hate to wait for anything without a guitar.

Playtime # 12 is played in Open D Tuning on my “at work” guitar. Back in those days I spent a lot of time in Open D. Earlier it was open E but on the 12-string the high G string kept breaking trying to go up to a G#, so I chose to instead go down to F# and Open D tuning. I do know the neck quite well in Open D but I still find new and beautiful things to do.

Eric’s Playtime Series # 5 – Number 27

Uncategorized
Playtime # 5 is also from my first day of me videoing me playing my songs. Played on my amazing Breedlove Atlas Stage Acoustic 12-string. This is my favorite 12-string I have ever

played! Back when I did a lot of open mics, this was my usual performance instrument. The only challenge was to make sure it was tuned. Most often back in those days it was tuned to an open D tuning which is the tuning used in this song.

Number 27 is one of my premiere instrumental pieces to this day. The song has evolved over time and the name has changed. There is a story about that.

I played this instrumental at jams and open mics starting from the day I first wrote it. A musical friend, Pedro, eventually learned the song and he said to me “You can’t change Number 27”. Personally I do believe that songs are “alive” and that they grow and even have moods expressed in each live performance. However, I agreed not to change Number 27. So Later versions were “Number 27 and One Half. I even considered changing the name to “As I Walk”, but I think this song will always be some version of “Number 27”.

I never really know how I write my songs. I do believe that they come from somewhere inside of me. Sometimes I feel like I am discovering a song that is fully realized in my sub-conscious. This song amazes me every time I play it. How could little old Eric write such a thing? I don’t know if you will be amazed by the song, but please give it a listen and let me know if it affects you like it did me!
