LYRICS
VERSE 1
When I was a child
Grandpa said man to man
Hold close to your memories
Keep all that you can
He gave to me
An old wooden box
Said, gather special things
And you won't get lost
CHORUS
I collect reminders
Stash 'em safely in a box
Makes me feel so good
The feelings they unlock
I got 'em all right here
Right here
In my Treasure Box
VERSE 2
Memories
A gold pocket watch
Grandpa's gift
Sure means a lot
An old photograph
Of my mom
It's all I have
Since she’s gone
CHORUS
I collect reminders
Stash 'em safely in a box
Makes me feel so good
The feelings they unlock
I got 'em all right here
Right here
In my Treasure Box
VERSE 3
I spend time with Grandpa
He feels lost and alone
To help him remember
What he used to know
He gets confused
Forgets who from who
I help remind him
It’s the best I can do
CHORUS
I collect reminders
Stash 'em safely in a box
Makes me feel so good
The feelings they unlock
I got 'em all right here
Right here
In my Treasure Box
VERSE 4
I imagine
If I forgot
I'd pull myself together
An' open up the box
I'd make up strange stories
Some fantastic lies
To suit the reminders
Of the memories inside
CHORUS
I collect reminders
Stash 'em safely in a box
Makes me feel so good
The feelings they unlock
I got 'em all right here
Right here
In my Treasure Box

TREASURE BOX – Song Diary
The song idea came to me during a conversation with a friend. My friend spoke about a treasure box they had as a child. Just the idea got me thinking and a song was inevitable, plus what a great title! I thought about what a person would put in their treasure box and I knew for me it would be important memories. So I decided to write it as a song about memory loss. Neither of my late parents suffered from memory loss but many of my friends’ lives were touched by this as their parents aged.
Originally the song was recorded with Ukulele only. Later I decided a bass would add another dimension. I also considered an electric piano but I decided that it was not needed. One of my philosophical thoughts about songwriting is to “add only what makes the song better”. For example, in my opinion, this song would not be better with drums.
I have played guitar for many decades and even before that I played my father’s ukulele. Yet as a songwriter I have made an effort to not learn how to play the ukulele. I could easily learn the chords and how the instrument is typically played but I want to be unique and express myself with only one goal. “To make a song that sounds good”. I have two songs written on the ukulele, Treasure Box and Siren Song. Both are unusual but beautiful.
My favorite part of the song is verse 4. As a writer I try to speak plainly at all times, except when I am poetic. I love the idea of creating new memories based on the contents of my treasure box because I have forgotten the facts.
I’d make up strange stories, some fantastic lies
To suit the reminders of the memories inside
