Lyric Discussion – Summer Dancing

Blog Post, Lyric Blog
VERSE 1
Moonlit shadows race and fly
Chased by dancing feet
Cool mist gives hope to the sand
Free rides on sandy feet
Waves come close but never arrive
The jealous moon peers down
Nature and song pull as one
Two dancers spinning ‘round

CHORUS
Summer dancing
Flirting with the tide
Summer dancing
Nature on your side
Dance a little closer
Kiss a little longer
With love your only guide

VERSE 2
Gentle waves wash sand back to rest
Released from dancer's feet
The sand teaches how to let go
And relaxes on the beach
The drum keeps up nature’s time
The bass pulls from distant past
Singing songs with forgotten rhymes
Love approaches fast
CHORUS
Summer dancing
Flirting with the tide
Summer dancing
Nature on your side
Dance a little closer
Kiss a little longer
With love your only guide

VERSE 3
They fall into each other's arms
This once in a lifetime love
Then collapsing to the sand
Their souls forever one

(Vibraphone Solo)

CHORUS
Summer dancing
Flirting with the tide
Summer dancing
Nature on your side
Dance a little closer
Kiss a little longer
With love your only guide

OUTRO (breakdown with just bass)
The jealous moon peers down
Tears form in her eyes
Just a lonely spectator
She’s cursed to be alone

This is my most poetic lyric to date, and therefore one of my favorites. With language that would never be spoken these days, and the personification of shadows, the moon, the waves, sand and misty air, this song defies all of the wisdom of songwriting mentors.

They tell us to never use language that normal people don’t use. “It should sound conversational”, they say. But isn’t there something special about a beautiful poem by one of the greats. They say things in an un-natural fashion – and it is really emotional and beautiful. Hey, I strive for beautiful and emotional lyrics too! So I will sometimes take advantage of poetic language in my songs. In essence I think those who are against poetic songs just haven’t heard a great one! So maybe they really do think what they say but one day they will hear a song that will change their mind. I hope so.

Songwriters study and try to learn the “rules”. * Songs have to be short – under 3 minutes. * They all need a chorus and * a consistent rhyme scheme. * Don’t use any word more than once except in the chorus. – There are a lot of these “rules”. I think of them not as rules but as advice. Most successful songs follow the patterns and conform. But the truth, as I see it, you only need to observe these “rules” if your song would be better if you do so. A lot of great songs break the “rules”. I try to learn why the advice is useful and then decide if my song needs it.

For example, “you need a bridge if your song is not holding the listener’s attention”. Interestingly enough, I met a lifetime folk musician who told me, “if you write a good enough song you will keep their attention. If you need a bridge, just write a better song!” I try not to need a bridge. LOL.

Moonlit shadows race and fly
Chased by dancing feet

I could have written “Two people dancing in the moonlight”. That is what is happening at this point in the song. But instead, I chose to capture the interaction of the moonlight, clouds, movement, dancers and dancing. And all in just those nine words. I chose to evoke an image with greater meaning with my few words. In a way, basically, I did what songwriter do. We try to jam pack as much information and imagery as possible into every line so that the listener “feels” what we intended.

The jealous moon peers down
Tears form in her eyes
Just a lonely spectator
She’s cursed to be alone

If I were a romantic, and if I believed in fairy tails, mythology and fantasy, I might take up the popular view that the moon is a romantic character and she just loves “love”. Or I could take the scientific stance that space is almost empty, and almost every time the moon has come in contact with anything, there was a problem and craters were blasted into the surface of her face. If the moon were sentient, how could she not be jealous of those who are not so alone. Those enjoying the love denied to her.

I have taken the path in this song to entertain the notion that elements of nature are “alive” and “pulling” for this couple falling in love. That the waves, wind, sand, etc. all want to be personally responsible for the successful romance. Even the music seems to get involved.

Personification:

noun

  1. the attribution of a personal nature or human characteristics to something non-human, or the representation of an abstract quality in human form.
  2. a person, animal, or object regarded as representing or embodying a quality, concept, or thing.

After the “Jealous” moon, my favorite characters in the song are the grains of sand. They appear to be fun loving and relaxed, without a care in the world. They just want to take a ride on the dancers, damp feet. How could they not be laid back – for them every day is “a day at the beach”.

Cool mist gives hope to the sand
Free rides on sandy feet

Gentle waves wash sand back to rest
Released from dancer’s feet
The sand teaches how to let go
And relaxes on the beach

Wouldn’t you like to be one of those grains of sand having such a great time?

Feel free to comment on what I have written here. I would love a healthy discussion. Always remember we are born with an understanding of music. We don’t need a degree nor do we need to play an instrument to be an expert in music. If I play a beautiful song you can tell, and if it is not so good, you know that too.

Eric’s Playtime # 18 – The Day I wrote “Fishin’ For a Hook” January, 31st 2021

Almost Released Songs
Fishin’ For a Hook has been produced and recorded in Nashville with some of the best players and can be heard on my website: MusicofEricWise.com.

Here I am playing my Nashville tuned guitar. This is where the 4 strings with the low notes are tuned to be one octave higher. This makes for a “chimey” sound. Imagine just the “high” strings from a set of 12-string guitar strings. This was the day I wrote the music for what would become my song “Fishin’ for a Hook“.

The lyrics came quickly once I had the title – Fishin’ For a Hook – of course it is about a songwriter going fishing to find a “hook” for a song. And we all know that fishing is about thinking more than fish. To find a good hook requires that you dive down deep and search for something just out of reach. Throw in “Grab me some PBRs” and you’ve got yourself a country song. LOL

Eric’s Playtime Series # 17 – Playing in Open D

Uncategorized
This song is played on my “work guitar” in Open D tuning. I keep this guitar at work.
This video was shot in 2019 but I was just playing a tune just like this one yesterday (2024). Some tunes stick in your head and keep re-appearing! I just love going from the One chord to the two.

So powerful. Oh. And I also love harmonized sixths.

I remember the day I discovered harmonizing double stops. Suddenly what they were doing in Brown Eyed Girl made sense. I started hearing this technique is so many songs. It changed me as a writer and as a player.

I apply this technique at about 1:20 in the video as well as in the chords being played throughout. I hope you enjoy the video.

A Pocket Full a Songs – Lyric Video

Lyric Video, Released Songs

This song was my first release. To be honest, I released it first because I didn’t like it as much as the others I released later. I figured that I should work my way up in song quality. With all that, a couple people like this song the best of all of them.

When I pitched this to a music supervisor, she suggested that this would be a good song for children. I don’t know about that but it does have a simple melody.

A song about a man using music to get by in life.

Eric’s Playtime Series # 16 – A Swampy Song

Uncategorized
This song is played on my Breedlove Phoenix in standard tuning. I love this guitar! I grew up in standard tuning. I also love what I call “swampy blues”. Feels to me like how I felt when I heard …

Black Water by the Doobie Brothers. I’m not sure if Swampy describes it very well but to me it does. How would you describe this feel?

Eric’s Playtime Series # 15 – Beautiful and Relaxing Simple song May 10, 2022

Uncategorized
My Baritone guitar adds a low end to the music. Such a great tone with great projection.
This song is just playing around in Open B (tuned like Open D on a normal guitar).

Several people have liked this video so far. Maybe I’ll add some lyrics.

Eric’s Playtime Series # 14 – Beautiful and Relaxing Simple song May 10, 2022

Uncategorized
This song is played on my Breedlove Phoenix 30Th anniversary guitar. This guitar is made with “sinker Redwood”. This is wood from the Amazon that was under water, soaking, for as long as a

century or more. We might think that the wood would rot but it does not. It actually becomes even better for guitar making.

Playtime # 14 is again played in Open D Tuning. I have spent a lot of time in Open D. I find it a really beautiful tuning with tons of possibilities.

Eric’s Playtime Series # 13 – Nice Drop D Rock Song

Uncategorized
Playtime # 13 is in Drop D tuning. The lowest note on the guitar is tuned down to a D and all the other strings stay the same.

This is a simple rock song. Often, the simpler the better. Leave a comment to let me know if you like this one.

The guitar is my “at work” guitar. A generic Fender with a cut-away. Cut-aways are nice for reaching way up the neck.

Eric’s Playtime Series # 12 – Open D Fun

Uncategorized
When I need a guitar, I always have one. I even have a carbon fiber guitar that lives in my car trunk. A Carbon Fiber guitar is not affected by the temperature. It is also impervious to water and

is made from materials that are not damaged by impacts. So it is safe to “live” in the trunk. I always have a guitar close by. I hate to wait for anything without a guitar.

Playtime # 12 is played in Open D Tuning on my “at work” guitar. Back in those days I spent a lot of time in Open D. Earlier it was open E but on the 12-string the high G string kept breaking trying to go up to a G#, so I chose to instead go down to F# and Open D tuning. I do know the neck quite well in Open D but I still find new and beautiful things to do.

Eric’s Playtime Series # 11 – In the Groove

Uncategorized
Playtime # 11 is played in Drop D Tuning on my classical guitar. It is amazing how, even an inexpensive, nylon string guitar can have such tone.

Start with a groove, add a riff or two – Voila – song. Played in drop D this song is well liked! Played immediately after composing. A matter of minutes.

Eric’s Playtime is all about an authentic presentation of real time creativity. One-Take ensures all the mistakes are there too!

I used to play during lunches and to take a break at the place I worked back then. In this video I explain this to a passerby. A minute later my boss walks by and leers at me. LOL. It was my lunch break!
